Abstract
The complex experience of human sexual desire is considered from cognitive, affective and physiological points of view. The relationship between mood and sexuality is emphasised and may reflect common biochemical mechanisms. The behavioural effects of steroid hormones are better understood in men than women and may be mediated by the aminergic systems. Pharmacological manipulation of these systems in humans is limited by non-specific side effects.
