Abstract
Is the ability to roll ones eyes upward and then close the eyelids without looking down a predictor of hypnotic susceptibility as Spiegel has suggested? This paper reports non-significant negative correlations between the eye-roll test and both the HGSHS:A and the SHSS:C. Test conditions included separate and blind administration of the eye-roll and susceptibility scales, good reliability and range on all measures, and an adequate sample (N = 52) for testing the hypothesized relationship. Population and scale differences, E-bias, and selective elimination of Ss are discussed as possibly producing the relationship between eye-roll and hypnotic susceptibility reported in Spiegels system.
