Abstract
This article looks at changes in the Italian Democrats of the Left political identity, organizational structure and competitive strategies. Our findings indicate that the party policy positions along the left-right dimension have shifted toward the centre of the ideological spectrum. We argue that political competition and coalition building have created a dilemma between merging strategy and party identity. Changes within the party organization point to a declining trend in membership enrolment, the emergence of a factional structure and modifications in leadership selection procedures.
