Abstract
This article is based on recent experiences at the Spoornet coal export line. The objective here is to present an analysis of asymmetric wheel profile wear and its consequences. After describing the drivers of the damage process, the consequential damages to the wheels, rails, turnouts and bogie components are highlighted. Corrective actions and the envisaged long-term wheel/rail interface management strategy are also presented. The technical solution to the problem involved the development of a new wheel and rail profile, as well as the optimization of the grinding process.
