Abstract
The Chesney Gold Medal is the RUSI's highest award, presented in recognition of an outstanding contribution to the military sciences and history. Previous recipients have included the Rt Hon Winston S Churchill, Marshal of the Royal Air Force Sir John Slessor, Professor Sir Michael Howard, John Terraine and General Sir John Hackett. In his award presentation in the presence of HRH the Duke of Kent, the Medal's latest winner, Correlli Barnett, explores Britain's slide from world power, characterised by a widening gulf between political pretensions and red resources, asking if Britain, has a realistic total strategy to meet the challenges of a highly uncertain future.
