Abstract
Coexisting disabilities involve persons with physical, cognitive, and psychiatric disabilities together with alcohol and other drug (AOD) abuse concerns. Prevalence rates of coexisting disabilities are high and access to treatment is limited. This study examined the attitudes of AOD abuse counselors as well as their perceptions of competency in working with people with coexisting disabilities. A significant negative relationship was found between counselor competence and their knowledge of the impact of coexisting disabilities (r = -.519). A significant relationship was also found between counselor attitude toward the problems associated with coexisting disabilities in treatment and both their accurate responses (r = .784) and their inaccurate responses on the impact of coexisting disabilities (r = .726).
