Help: Tips for using advanced search

The advanced search form can be accessed by selecting the Advanced Search link in the top right of the page.

Advanced searches will always deliver article or chapter results.

Tips:

Searching for one word in one field
Searching for three words in one field
Searching for an article by a word in the article title, and the author name
Searching for articles matching one term but not another
Setting search limits

Searching for one word in one field
example: Searching for eczema in article/chapter title

Step 1: Enter eczema into the first field.
Step 2: Using the drop down selector, choose Article/Chapter Title.
Step 3: Hit Search

Searching for three words in one field
example: Searching for eczema, hand and skin in article/chapter title

Step 1: Enter all three words into the first field
Step 2: Using the drop down selector, choose Article/Chapter Title.
Step 3: Select Search
By default only results containing ALL of the words are shown. This can be changed to ANY of the words, using the selector

Searching for an article by a word in the article title, and the author name
example: Searching for eczema in article/chapter title and Agner in authors

Step 1: Enter eczema into the first field.
Step 2: Using the drop down selector, choose Article/Chapter Title.
Step 3: Enter Agner into the second field.
Step 4: Using the drop down selector, choose Author.
Step 5: Hit Search

Searching for articles matching one term but not another
example: Searching for articles containing eczema in the title, but not dermatology in the publication name

Step 1: Enter eczema into the first field.
Step 2: Using the drop down selector, choose Article/Chapter Title.
Step 3: Select NOT from the AND/OR/NOT drop down.
Step 4: Enter dermatology into the second field.
Step 4: Using the drop down selector, choose Publication Name.
Step 5: Hit Search
If you are searching for an article containing one term but not another in the same field, you can enter both terms into the first field with a NOT between them. e.g. eczema NOT dermatology would give you results for article titles containing eczema and not dermatology.

Setting Search Limits

The advanced search form allows you to limit your search results to:

  • a publication type e.g. ebooks
  • your subscribed publications
  • selected subjects
  • a date range
You can also set the prefered ordering of your results and number of results displayed per page.
