Instructions for Authors

Editorial policy
The Journal of Dermatological Treatment publishes articles dealing with all aspects of the treatment of skin disorders. Articles will be included on both the topical and systemic treatment of skin disease as well as on phototherapy, the surgical approach and other types of treatment and the overall management of patients with skin disorders.

The Journal of Dermatological Treatment includes:

  • Original articles
  • Invited and submitted reviews on specific therapies.
  • Invited contributions on the management of specific dermatoses.
  • Original articles which may be either invited or submitted on the following themes:
             Classic clinical trial
             Favoured prescriptions
             The pharmaceutics of topical preparations
             Adverse reactions
(These articles are intended to create a forum on current thought and developments. Therefore, they may
have a more informal perspective. They should not exceed 1,500 words in length.)
  • Viewpoint section: This newly designed section considers succinct, well-reasoned, speculative articles on dermatological therapeutics, such as theorizing a novel mode of action for a drug or treatment modality whose mechanism of action has not been fully explored yet or suggesting a novel treatment for a therapeutically challenging dermatological disorder. Theoretical papers on dermatophysiology will also be considered for publication on condition that the authors discuss the potential impact of their theory on dermatopharmacology.
  • Correspondence concerning recent publications as well as areas of topical interest. Up to 500 words in length.
  • News bulletins, including information on forthcoming national and international meetings.
  • Selected abstracts and critical analysis of selected important papers.
  • Original reports of clinical trials that fail to demonstrate efficacy.

In all cases a letter will be sent to the authors by the Editors, indicating acceptance or explaining the reasons for rejection. Papers may be accepted subject to amendment by the authors. If a paper is not resubmitted within three months, it will be treated as a new submission.

The Journal of Dermatological Treatment will consider for publication manuscripts prepared in accordance with the guidelines laid down by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (Br Med J 1988, 296: 48—50, further info can be found at: http://www.icmje.org/). While authors are asked to write their manuscripts in English using an easily readable style, editorial assistance for authors not completely fluent in English may be available. Spelling and phraseology should conform to standard English usage.

The Concise Oxford English Dictionary is used as a reference for all spelling and hyphenation, with the exception of articles submitted from North America. These should follow Webster's Dictionary for spelling and hyphenation. A manuscript will be considered for publication on the understanding that it reports unpublished work that is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, that all named authors have agreed to its submission and have obtained permission from their employers or institution to publish if they have a contractual or moral obligation to do so, and that, if accepted, it will not be published later in the same or similar form in any language without the consent of the publishers. The Editors reserve the right to make changes which may clarify or condense papers where this is considered desirable.

Online submission
All submissions should be made online at the Journal of Dermatological Treatment's Manuscript Central site http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jdt. New users should first create an account. Once a user is logged onto the site submissions should be made via the Author Centre.

Your submission will be acknowledged by an e-mail which includes the Manuscript ID number for your paper. Remember to refer to this number in the subject line of any correspondence with the Editorial Office. You can view of the status of your manuscript via your author center.

Preparation of manuscripts
Any special points should be emphasized in the covering letter from the submitting author. Papers describing original research should be arranged as follows:

  1. Title page
  2. Abstract
  3. Keywords
  4. Introduction
  5. Materials (or patients) and methods
  6. Results
  7. Discussion
  8. Acknowledgements
  9. References
  10. Legends to tables and figures
  11. Tables
  12. Figures (preferrably submitted as separate files, see below)

The title page should bear the title of the paper, the full names of the authors, their affiliations and addresses, the name, email address, and full postal address of the author to whom correspondence and reprint requests are to be sent and a running title of not more than 50 letters and spaces. The Abstract should not exceed 200 words. It should be written in a style that conveys the essential message of the paper in abbreviated form. The abstract should be included in the main manuscript file as well asn entered in the designated area in the submission system to be used for correspondence with reviewers. Keywords (3-6 words) must be supplied otherwise the paper cannot be included in the annual index. The Introduction should assume that the reader is knowledgeable in the field and should, therefore, be as brief as possible. In the Materials and methods section, methods that have been published in detail elsewhere should not be described in detail.

Abbreviations and symbols used must be standard and SI units used throughout. Acronyms should be used sparingly and must be fully explained when first used. Whenever possible drugs should be given their approved generic name. When a proprietary (brand) name must be used, it should begin with a capital letter. Statistical analyses must explain the methods used.

References
Number references consecutively in the order in which they are first mentioned in the text. Identify references in the text, tables and legends by Arabic numerals in parentheses. References cited in tables and legends to figures should be numbered in accordance with a sequence established by the first identification in the text of the particular table or illustration. The titles of the journals should be abbreviated according to the style used in Index Medicus (see www.nlm.nih.gov/pubs/libprog.html). The reference style is Vancouver.

The use of abstracts in the list of references should be avoided. Manuscripts accepted but not yet published are designated 'in press'. Unpublished observations as well as manuscripts submitted but not yet accepted should be cited in the text only as `unpublished observationsacute with the authors' initials, surname and institution as well as the year when the observation was made. List all authors when 6 or fewer; when 7 or more, list the first 6 and add 'et al'. The references must be verified by the authors against the original documents. Authors are strongly recommended to use a bibliographic software program such as EndNote.

Magnification is best indicated by a line representing a defined length included within the photographs.

Author proofs - final approval

Authors will be notified via e-mail when a manuscript is ready for final approval before publication. This e-mail provides instructions on how to log on to the online author service, where the final version of the manuscript can be downloaded as a printer ready PDF file.

To avoid delays of publication, proofs should be checked immediately and returned electronically through the online service, following the instructions given. Corrections submitted via the telephone are not accepted. Authors are advised that they are responsible for proof-reading of the text, references, tables and figures for absolute accuracy. Additional material or major corrections cannot be accepted at this stage, nor is substantial rewriting of paragraphs permitted. Such extensive changes may result in a delay or withdrawal of the article from publication. Any costs arising from major additional changes may also be charged to the authors.

It is a condition of publication that authors assign copyright or license the publication rights of the contents of their articles, including abstracts, to Informa Healthcare.
