Gainesville, Florida, U.S.A.
Biography
Dr. Barney L. Capehart is a Professor Emeritus of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida. He has BS and Master's degrees in Electrical Engineering and a Ph.D. in Systems Engineering. He taught at the University of Florida from 1968 until 2000, where he taught a wide variety of courses in energy systems analysis, energy efficiency and computer simulation. For the last 25-30 years, energy systems analysis has been his main area of research and publication. He is the co-author or chapter contributor on six books on energy topics, the author of over 50 energy research articles in scholarly journals, and has been involved in 11-12 funded energy research projects totaling over $2,000,000.
He has performed energy efficiency and utility research projects for the Florida Governor's Energy Office, the Florida Public Service Commission, and several utilities in the state of Florida. In addition, he has served as an Expert Witness in the development of the Florida Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act electric growth goals, the Florida Rules for Payments to Cogenerators, and the passage of the Florida Appliance Efficiency Standards Act. He is one of the state's leading experts on electric utility Demand Side Management programs for reducing customer costs and for increasing the efficiency of customer end-use.
He also has broad experience in the commercial/industrial sector, with his management of the University of Florida Industrial Assessment Center from 1990 until 1999. This center performs audits for small and medium sized manufacturing plants, and is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. He has personally conducted over 100 audits of industrial facilities, and has helped students conduct audits of hundreds of office buildings, small businesses, government facilities, and apartment complexes. He regularly taught a University of Florida course on Energy Management to about fifty engineering students each year. He currently teaches Energy Management seminars around the country and around the world for the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE). In addition, he has been a prolific author of newspaper articles and has appeared on numerous radio and TV talk shows to discuss his work on energy efficiency and reducing people's electric bills. He is also a popular speaker at civic, professional, educational, and government meetings to talk about the benefits of energy efficiency.
Dr. Capehart is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Institute of Industrial Engineers. He is also a Member of the Hall of Fame of the AEE. He is listed in Who's Who in the World and Who's Who in America. In 1988 he was awarded the Palladium Medal by the American Association of Engineering Societies for his work on energy systems analysis and appliance efficiency standards. He has conducted many energy research projects, and has published over fifty journal articles. He was the Editor of the International Journal of Energy Systems from 1985-1988.
He is the editor of Information Technology for Energy Managers—Understanding Web Based Energy Information and Control Systems, Fairmont Press, 2004; senior co-editor of Web Based Energy Information and Control Systems, Fairmont Press, 2005; senior co-editor of Web Based Enterprise Energy Management and BAS Systems, Fairmont Press, 2007; senior co-author of the fifth edition of the Guide to Energy Management, Fairmont Press, 2006; and author of the chapter on Energy Management in the Handbook of Industrial Engineering, Second Edition, by Gavriel Salvendy. He also wrote the chapter on Energy Auditing for the Energy Management Handbook, Sixth Edition by Wayne C. Turner.
