Instructions for Authors

Aims and Scope:

Studies in Gender and Sexuality is a response to the excitement attendant on recent research and writing by scholars and clinicians alike. It provides a forum for examining gender and sexuality that is both multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary; in this way it seeks to broaden the purview—theoretical, clinical, and cultural—of all its readers and to promote constructive exchanges among them. As clinicians and scholars who have written and practiced at the intersection of feminist theory and clinical psychoanalysis for the past two decades, the Editors are particularly interested in those areas of controversy that invite the divergent perspectives and insights of different disciplines. The primary goal of Studies in Gender and Sexuality is to promote dialogue on these and other timely topics among clinicians, researchers, and theorists. Consonant with this goal, the journal also publishes related work from the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences, where questions involving gender and sexuality are currently in lively debate.

Manuscript Submission:

Only original material, heretofore unpublished in any form and not under simultaneous review by another journal, is eligible for publication in Studies in Gender and Sexuality. Submit your manuscript as an email attachment to Muriel Dimen, Ph.D. (murieldimen@nyu.edu). At the same time, submit one (1) hard copy of the manuscript to Muriel Dimen, Ph.D., Editor, Studies in Gender and Sexuality, 3 East Tenth Street, Suite 1B1, New York, NY 10013, USA. Any figures or tables that are part of the manuscript must be submitted in reproducible hard copy or in camera-ready electronic form. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyrighted material from other sources and are required to sign an agreement for the transfer of copyright to the publisher. All accepted manuscripts, artwork, and photographs become the property of the publisher.

Manuscript Preparation:

Manuscripts should be 20-40 standard manuscript pages (approximately 1500 characters per page) in length, with each page containing 25 double-spaced lines and having margins of 1.5 inches (left) and 1 inch (right, top, and bottom). Please use a non-proportional font (Courier 12) rather than a proportional font (e.g., Times New Roman). All material, including quotations, footnotes, and reference lists, must be double spaced.

The title page of the article should contain author(s) name(s) and degree(s)/affiliation(s), title of article, and all contact information (mailing address, phone/fax numbers, and mailing address) of the corresponding author. To facilitate blind review, only the title page of the manuscript should contain this identifying information. The second page should include the article title, an abstract of 150-200 words, and a list of key words for use in indexing.

Submitted articles that have passed preliminary screening for topicality and readability will undergo blind peer review. The normal review period is three (3) months. After a manuscript has been accepted for publication, the authors will be asked to submit an electronic copy via email to mdimen@psychoanalysis.net. Any figures or tables that are part of the manuscript must be submitted at this time in camera-ready form (high-quality hard copy or high-resolution image file, e.g., .tif ).

References:

In the manner of most psychoanalytic journals, text references follow the author-date system, e.g., (Smith, 1978) and are cited within the text, not as footnotes or endnotes. Multiple text references are listed chronologically, not alphabetically. Every text citation must have its corresponding reference listing (on a separate page at the end of the article), and the reference list should contain publication information about only those sources cited in the text. Some examples follow:

Journal: Tsai, M., & Wagner, N. N. (1978), Therapy groups for women sexually molested as children. Arch. Sexual Behav., 7: 417-427.

Book: Millman, M. (1980), Such a Pretty Face. New York: W. W. Norton.

Contribution to a Book: Hartley, J. T., & Walsh, D. A. (1980), Contemporary issues in adult development of learning. In Ageing in the 1980s, ed. L. W. Poon. Washington, DC: American Psychological Association, pp. 239252.

Quotations must be followed by their source page numbers in parentheses, e.g., (p. 120); a quotation of more than five (5) typewritten lines will be set as an extract and should be typed as a double-spaced indented block. A detailed style sheet for final preparation of reference lists will be sent to authors of manuscripts accepted for publication.

Proofs and Reprints:

Page proofs are sent to the designated author using Taylor & Francis' Central Article Tracking System (CATS). They must be carefully checked and returned within 48 hours of receipt. Reprints of individual articles are available for order at the time authors review page proofs. A discount on reprints is available to authors who order before print publication.
