Requirements of the Submission
All submissions have to be made through Manuscript Central and will, after a first decision of the editorial office, be subject to the normal process of peer review. Contributors should note that material submitted to the journal:
- must be original and not have already appeared in another publication;
- must not be already accessible online (Working Paper, e-Journal etc). It is the policy of the Journal not to publish unchanged submissions that have already been made available via Working Paper Series or electronic papers. If a submission builds upon a prior publication of this form, the author should provide documentation about the substantial revisions and changes that were made;
- must not be submitted for publication elsewhere while under consideration by the journal.
Formally, submissions must meet the following requirements to be considered for review:
- Maximum length of 8000 words including notes, references, tables, figures and diagrams. Please note that 475 words have to be deducted from the word budget for each full page of tables, figures or diagrams.
- The original manuscript shall provide a cover page including title, abstract of 100-150 words summarising the significant coverage and findings, 4-6 keywords and full correspondence details (street address, telephone, fax and email address) of the corresponding author.
- The author(s) must also submit an anonymised version of the manuscript, where all information identifying the author(s) should be removed to allow the submission to be sent anonymously to referees.
- Please make sure that the manuscript is submitted as a Word document (and not as a PDF file).
- The Journal welcomes submissions of proposals for Special Issues. An annual call for such proposals will be launched by the Editors about six months before the deadline for submission.
How to Submit All submissions should be made online at the
Journal of European Integration Manuscript Central site. New users should first create an account. Once a user is logged onto the site submissions should be made via the Author Centre. Authors should prepare and upload
two versions of their manuscript as Microsoft Word documents:
1) The original manuscript ("file not for review") including a cover page with title, abstract of 100-150 words, keywords and full correspondence details;
2) Anonymised version ("main document"), where all document information identifying the author should be removed to allow the file to be sent anonymously to referees. Therefore please remove the cover page, acknowledgements, as well as any other references to yourself.
Furthermore, it is possible to upload tables, figures, a title page and another supplemental file.
Special Issue Information
The Style of the Journal
Authors are responsible for ensuring that their manuscripts conform to the journal style. Please make sure that the manuscript is submitted as a Word-document (and not as a PDF-file).
References should be included in the text between brackets according to the author-year-page scheme.
Notes must be presented as endnotes. They should be listed before the references and must be numbered in consecutive order.
Tables and figures. Tables must be submitted on separate pages and not included as part of the main text. The captions to illustrations should be gathered and typed on a separate page. Tables and figures should be numbered by Arabic numerals. The approximate position of tables and figures should be indicated in the paper. Please supply clear copies of artwork (preferably the originals) for figures in a finished format suitable for reproduction. Figures will not normally be redrawn by the publisher. The author(s) must arrange permission for the reproduction of illustrations and tables within articles. Figures should be submitted preferably in either TIFF (tagged image format) or EPS (encapsulated Postscript) formats. However, we can also accept PICT or JPEG formats. The publisher will normally reproduce colour figures in black and white.
Standard UK English spelling is encouraged. Capitals should be used as sparingly as possible and consistently. Foreign words except proper names should be written in italics. Dates should be in the form 1 May 1982, 1990s (no apostrophe), the twentieth century. Numbers up to 100 should normally be spelt out, except for percentages, exact quantities, or a series of numbers.
Quotations of more than 60 words should be indented in the typescript but typed in double line spacing. Square brackets should be used to enclose interpolations, and three dots to indicate omissions.
A printed list of any special symbols should be submitted with the manuscript. The list will not appear in print, but is essential for typesetting and helps avoiding costly correction in proof.
Reference Style
References should be made in "Chicago Author-Date Style", indicated by giving the author's name with the year of publication in parenthesis. No punctuation appears between author and date. When a specific page is cited, it follows the date, receded by a comma and "p". If several publications by the same author and from the same year are cited, a,b,c, etc. should be put after the year of publication. Where two or more works by different authors with the same name are listed, the text citation must include an initial. Include all names when up to three authors. For four or more authors use et al.
For example: (Smith 2008, p25), (Haas et al. 2007, p. 280)
The references should be listed in full at the end of the paper in the following standard form:
Nagengast, E. (2003) The Bene

Decrees and EU Enlargement,
Journal of European Integration, 25(4), pp. 335-350.
Wolchik, S.L. (1998) Czechoslovakia, in: S.P. Ramet (ed.)

Titles of journals should
not be abbreviated.
