Instructions for Authors

City welcomes academic, professional, practical, literary and artistic contributions to the representation and analysis of urban trends, culture, theory, policy and action.

Submission of all articles in City apart from shorter reports, reviews and interviews occurs in two stages. In the first stage we ask authors to submit a short proposal of no more than 1800 words outlining their contribution. City encourages authors to look at a number of sources to inform this proposal: the aims and scope printed on the inside front cover of the journal and on the website; a selection of the editorials which feature at the front of each issue of the journal; and to other articles in City which relate to their proposal. Proposals should include a summary of the intended article, explain how it relates to the concerns of the journal and indicate where authors think their work breaks new ground or furthers debates in the field. A bibliography should be included to indicate how the paper relates to other published work. Proposals will be peer reviewed and authors will receive a decision with explanation from the editors of City as to whether to move to the second stage and submit a full article based on the proposal. All full articles invited for submission will be sent out for peer review. Final decisions will be made by the editor. We welcome suitably detailed proposals for themed sections of up to 40,000 words and this will be subject to the same peer review process.

Submissions:

Preliminary enquiries should be addressed to Dan Swanton, Department of Geography, Durham University, Science Laboratories, South Road, Durham, DH1 3LE, UK. Email: d.j.swanton@durham.ac.uk . Submissions by e-mail or regular mail are equally welcome. If submitted by mail, a digital version on a disk should be included wherever possible. In the case of e-mail submissions, paper copies may be required upon request.

All correspondence regarding book reviews should be sent to Tyler Rebecca Pearce, University of British Columbia, Department of Geography, 1984 West Mall, Vancouver, BC V6T 1Z2, CANADA E-mail: tyler29@interchange.ubc.ca

Note to Authors. Please make sure the subject line of any e-mails includes reference to a submission to City. All submissions sent through the mail should have the words “Submission to City” and your contact address information clearly visible on the outside of all packages.

Draft guidance on lengths. Articles published in the main section will normally be between 4,000 and 8,000 words (exceptionally, up to 12,000) and should include a short abstract of up to 250 words and approximately 6 keywords. Articles published in the Debates and Prospects and Retrospects and the Alternatives section will normally be between 3,000 and 4,000 words (exceptionally up to 6,000) and should also include a short abstract. Material for the Reports, Reviews and Interviews section will normally be reviewed by members of the editorial board.

Manuscripts should be submitted double spaced with adequate margins (paper copies) or formatted for A4 or Letter sized paper (electronic submission). Submissions are to be sent in MS Word (.doc) format. Other common word processing formats (including OpenOffice, WordPerfect, Lotus WordPro or Rich Text Format) may be submitted in exceptional circumstances. In text hyper-links and the use of reference software (including RefWorks and EndNotes) should be avoided as these transfer poorly between various software types and operating systems.

City encourages visual contents, especially high quality photographs and graphics. Tables and Figures may initially be submitted in the text (embedded), but photographs and graphics should be sent as separate files when going into production, preferably either as TIFF (tagged image file format), GIF or JPEG formats. EPS (encapsulated postscript) formats may be submitted in exceptional circumstances. For pictorial images, the resolution should be no less than 300 dpi/ppi and for line diagrams, no less than 1200 dpi/ppi. Tables and figures should be labelled by Arabic numerals. The approximate position of tables and illustrations should be indicated in the paper and captions should be included at that point. The author(s) must arrange permission for the reproduction of copyright material within articles.

Endnotes should appear at the end of the main article before the references.

References should normally be in the following style, i.e. cited in text by author and date, e.g. Smith et al., 1995, Jones and Weimar, 1996. References should be prepared double-spaced on separate sheets at the end of the paper, e.g.
