Instructions for Authors

Housing Studies welcomes submissions via ScholarOneTM Manuscripts site: http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/chos. Please read further details below.

  1. The Editors welcome submission of manuscripts. By submission of a manuscript, an author certifies that the work is original, has not previously been published, is not being considered for publication elsewhere, and has been read and approved by all the authors. All Manuscripts are subject to anonymous peer review.

  1. Articles should fall within the range of 4000 to 8000 words. Contributions to the Policy Review section should normally be 2000 to 3000 words (but with the prior agreement of the Policy Review Editor may be as long as 4000 to 5000 words).

  1. All submissions should be made online at the Housing Studies ScholarOneTM Manuscripts site. New users should first create an account. Once a user is logged onto the site submissions should be made via the Author Centre. Authors should prepare and upload two versions of their manuscript. One should be a complete text, while in the second all document information identifying the author should be removed from files to allow them to be sent anonymously to referees. When uploading files authors will then be able to define the non-anonymous version as "File not for review".
Contributions must be in English, typed double spaced, using one side of the paper only, with a margin on all sides. Manuscripts will not be returned.

  1. Books for review should be sent to the Reviews Editor, Ya Ping Wang, School of the Built Environment, Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh EH14 4AS, UK (Fax: 0131 451 4617. Email: ya_ping.wang@hw.ac.uk).

  1. A short abstract of no more than 150 words should follow the title and precede the introduction. The abstract should be clear and informative, giving an indication of the scope of the paper and a summary of the results. The abstract should be followed by up to six key words which best indicate the content of the article. Any acknowledgements should be given at the end of the article. Measurements should be given in metric units.

  1. Tables and figures should not be inserted in the text but uploaded as a separate file. Refer to all tables as Tables, which should be numbered consecutively. Refer to all other illustrations (maps, charts, diagrams, photographs, etc.) as Figures, also numbered consecutively. Tables and figures should include short, informative captions; all captions should be gathered onto a separate sheet at the end of the manuscript.

  1. Contributions should conform exactly to the Housing Studies style. Authors should check the format of their own manuscript with that of a recent issue of the journal, paying particular attention to references, tables and figures.

  1. References should be cited in the text by giving the last name of the author(s) followed by the year of publication in parentheses, e.g. Smith & Jones (1990); (Smith, 1992a, 1992b). For three or more authors, use the first author followed by et al.

  1. The full reference list must be typed, double-spaced, on a separate page at the end of the manuscript. References should include all authors' names and initials, year of publication, title of article or book, the full title of the journal, volume and page numbers and, for books and other documents, the publisher's name and place of publication. For example:

  1. Endnotes are not normally permitted and should be avoided if at all possible. All relevant information apart from references should be incorporated into the main text.

  1. All contributions to the journal should use gender-neutral language. They should be written in clear and concise English. Authors should clarify the meaning or role of terms, institutions, and other material that may not be familiar to readers from countries other than their own.

  1. Page proofs will be sent to authors if time permits. These must be corrected immediately and returned promptly to the publisher. Only printer's errors should be corrected; major changes or corrections are not acceptable.

  1. Book reviews should be typed double-spaced. Only one copy need be submitted to Manuscript Central. The heading should include the title, author, origin, publisher, date, number of pages, and price, as in the following example:

Housing Transformations: Shaping the space of 21st century living, Bridget Franklin, London, Routledge, 2006, 303pp, pound29.99 (pbk), ISBN 0-415-33619-8
