Instructions for Authors

***Note to Authors: please make sure your contact address information is clearly visible on the outside of all packages you are sending to Editors.***

Potential contributors of articles should send brief abstracts or manuscripts to: Prof. Brian Jenkins, Research Professor, Dept of French, University of Leeds, Woodhouse Lane, Leeds LS2 9JT. Tel: 0113 233 3476

Submission of material

  1. If at all possible, all material should be submitted on 3.5 inch computer disks in PC format. If you are using an Apple Macintosh or some other non-standard computer, please transfer the file to a PC-format disk.
  2. Most wordprocessor file formats are acceptable, but Microsoft Word for Windows is preferred. Please enclose a printed version of the text with the disk, of good enough quality to be photocopied and circulated to referees.
  3. Illustrations such as diagrams, photographs etc should always be submitted in the best possible form for reproduction, i.e. quality original photographs, and with any copyright issue clarified.

General presentation

  1. All articles should be accompanied by an abstract.
  2. Title and subheadings: Please begin with a title followed by author(s) name(s), without any additional formatting such as bold or italics. Include regular subheadings, again without any special formatting, but do not start the body text with a subheading immediately following the main title and author(s) name(s). The first paragraph should be ordinary text, preferably of an introductory nature.
  3. References: Please use the Harvard system and use endnotes, kept as brief as possible.
    Chapter in book:
Jordan, G. & Stevenson, L. (2000) Redemocratizing Scotland, in A. Wright (Ed.) Scotland: The Challenge of Devolution, pp. 171-187 (Aldershot: Ashgate).
    Book:
Loewenberg, G. & Patterson, S. C. (1979) Comparing Legislatures (Boston, MA and Toronto: Little, Brown & Company).
    Article in journal:
Mamadouth, V. & Raunio, T. (2003) The committee system: powers, appointments and report allocation, Journal of Common Market Studies, 41(2), pp. 333-351.
  4. Abbreviations: Please avoid as much as possible. Sets of initials (NATO, USA, TUC, UNCTAD, SPD, etc.) should have no full stops between them.
  5. Dates: should be given as: day month year, without punctuation: 13 August 1961.
  6. Punctuation: Use single quotation marks for normal quotations and double quotation marks for a quotation within a quotation. Punctuation that is part of a quoted phrase should remain inside the quotation marks. When the end of a quotation coincides with the end of a sentence, the full stop should be before the quotation mark, unless the quotation is a single word or phrase not itself requiring a full stop.
  7. Translations: When mentioning non-English organizations, the name should be translated into English but the local abbreviation should be used, in parentheses after its first appearance (possibly alongside the full foreign name) and in the text subsequently: the German trade union federation (Deutscher Gewerkschaftsbund, DGB), or the Flemish Block (Vlaams Blok, VB).
  8. General formatting: Please keep to a minimum, avoiding any indents, rules or other fancy elements that are not strictly necessary. They will only be stripped out again for page formatting, and make extra work for the editors. NEVER use underlines or bold for emphasis, always italics.
  9. Book reviews: Please include all relevant bibliographical information, including number of pages, retail price and ISBN number.
  10. All copy should be accompanied by brief, 2 or 3-line notes on the author(s).
