Instructions for Authors

***Note to Authors: please make sure your contact address information is clearly visible on the outside of all packages you are sending to Editors.***

The Editors welcome contributions relevant to the aims of the journal from researchers, practitioners and teachers. Contributions should be in a form which is relevant to both an academic audience and planning practitioners. They should be critical and analytical rather than merely descriptive. The style of all contributions should be accessible to an international and multidisciplinary audience, and theoretical concepts should be explained clearly. We welcome the submission of articles, case studies of practice, literature reviews, research reports, comments and spotlight features of the activities of planning organisations. The Editors are happy to discuss possible contributions.

Length and review
Articles should be less than 8000 words and shorter articles of less than 5000 words are most welcome. PPR operates a double blind process for the review of articles. This applies to all articles. The editors may provide initial feedback to ensure that papers meet the general criteria before they are sent to referees. Practice forum pieces and comments are welcome and will usually be between 3,000 and 5,000 words. They are reviewed by the editorial board.

Submission
Articles, practice reviews and comments should be submitted in electronic format attached to an email addressed to Anthony Fuchs, PPR Editorial Assistant, at admin@readppr.com. Alternatively, you can send the contribution in hard copy format to the Editorial Assistant, PPR, Faculty of Architecture, Department of Urbanism, P.O. Box 5043, 2600 GA Delft, The Netherlands. Where appropriate, review of articles will be led by our editors in North America or Australia. In the first instance please send all contributions to the main address.

Book for reviews should be sent to the Editorial Assistant, PPR, Faculty of Architecture, Department of Urbanism, P.O. Box 5043, 2600 GA Delft, The Netherlands. PPR sends copies of reviews to the publisher and the book authors.

The first page should have the title of the article. You must provide the names and contact details of all authors, indicating the corresponding author. Full names are preferred to initials.

Articles and commentaries are accepted for review on the basis that they have not been published elsewhere, and that if accepted they will not be published elsewhere without the publisher's consent.

Format
Please ensure the title accurately explains the content of the paper. Use a sub-heading if you wish.

PPR now includes abstracts of articles and they should be about 100 words. The abstract is a summary of the whole article, not an introduction.

A limited number of notes with superscript numbers are acceptable but generally try to make the point in the main text. Use endnotes not footnotes.

Please be consistent in the use of sub-headings and do not use too many levels. For sub-headings use initial capitals as shown here.

Please proof read your paper carefully before submission.

Referencing
Generally, we expect papers to be properly referenced but only to the extent that arguments and assertions are justified. There is no need to give references to 'add weight'. Check your paper carefully to ensure that every citation is included in the reference list at the end. Also ensure that the list does not contain references not cited in the paper.

Use the Harvard system. References in the text should give the surname of the author and the year of publication in brackets, for example Collins (1993) or (Collins, 1993). Where you cite authors with publications on the same year distinguish these by adding 'a', 'b', etc. to the date, eg 2000a and 2000b. Page numbers are required for every quotation.

Ensure all references are complete and follow the format used in PPR. References should be listed in alphabetical order at the end of the paper, for example:

Begg, I. & Eversley, D. (1986) Deprivation in the inner city: social indicators from the 1981 Census, in: V.A. Hausner (Ed.) Critical Issues in Urban Economic Development, 1, pp. 50-88 (Oxford, Clarendon Press).
Broadbent, T. (1977) Planning and Profit in the Urban Economy (London, Methuen).
Collins, P. (1993) The need for planning in the 1990s, Planning Practice and Research, 8, pp. 25-36.

Titles of journals should not be abbreviated.

Illustrations
We encourage the illustration of articles with appropriate maps, diagrams and photographs. These should be good quality illustrations that will reproduce effectively given the page size of the journal. Any questions about the quality of illustrations will be taken up during the review stage. Illustrations may be submitted in hard copy or electronic format. All commonly used electronic formats (jpeg, tif, pdf, etc. are acceptable).

Figures, photographs and tables should be put separately at the end of the text, or in separate files if they are large. Particularly large files should be submitted on a CDRom. Indicate clearly where they should be placed in the text; eg <<Table 1 near here>.

All figures and tables need a caption. They should be numbered, 1, 2, 3, etc. and should be referred to in the text.

Illustrations will be printed in greyscale in the journal and be available in colour for the electronic journal.

Proofs
Proofs will be sent to authors if there is sufficient time to do so (and this is usually the case). They should be corrected and returned to the Editor within three days. Major alterations to the text cannot be accepted.

Free article access: Corresponding authors will receive free online access to their article through our website (www.informaworld.com) and a complimentary copy of the issue containing their article. Reprints of articles published in this journal can be purchased through Rightslink® when proofs are received. If you have any queries, please contact our reprints department at reprints@tandf.co.uk

It is a condition of publication that authors assign copyright or licence the publication rights in their articles, including abstracts, to Taylor & Francis. This enables us to ensure full copyright protection and to disseminate the article, and of course the Journal, to the widest possible readership in print and electronic formats as appropriate. Authors retain a number of other rights under the Taylor & Francis rights policies documents. These policies are referred to at http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/authorrights.pdf for full details.  Authors are themselves responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyright material from other sources.
