Instructions for Authors

Planning Theory & Practice welcomes submissions via ScholarOneTM Manuscripts site: http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/rptp. Please read further details below.

Further information about the journal including links to the online sample copy and contents pages can be found on the journal homepage.

1. The Editors welcome original contributions to the journal. By submission of a manuscript an author certifies that the work is original and is not being considered simultaneously by another publisher. All manuscripts will be refereed and only those receiving favourable recommendation will be accepted for publication. All submissions should be made online at the Planning Theory & Practice ScholarOneTM Manuscripts site. New users should first create an account. Once a user is logged onto the site submissions should be made via the Author Centre. Click here for Editorial Practice.

2. Manuscripts should normally be between 5000 and 9000 words and should be double-spaced and include page numbers. Any covering letter should be uploaded separately where specified on the Manuscript Central site. Authors should prepare and upload two versions of their manuscript. One should be a complete text, while in the second all document information identifying the author should be removed from files to allow them to be sent anonymously to referees. When uploading files authors will then be able to define the non-anonymous version as “File not for review”.

3. Articles should generally be written in the third person, but where appropriate articles may be written in the first person. A short abstract of up to 250 words should precede the introduction, indicating the scope of the article and the results it contains. A list of up to six key words should also be included. UK English or US English spelling may be used, but spelling must be consistent throughout. Footnotes should be avoided unless absolutely essential and where included, they will be treated as endnotes. Articles must be fully referenced (see below). All measurements should be given in metric units.

4. Do not insert tables and figures in the text but gather them at the end. Refer to tables as Tables, numbered consecutively, and refer to all other illustrations (maps, charts, diagrams, photographs, etc) as Figures, also numbered consecutively. Ensure that scales, keys and other critical labelling is included. Appropriate reductions in size can be made where necessary, and colour figures can be reproduced as half-tones, but note that where continuous shades of grey are used to indicate e.g., gradations on a map, these may not always reproduce clearly and in such cases line shading or stippling is to be preferred. All artwork will be produced as black and white, black and white photographs can be submitted as they will be changed to grey scale.

5. References should be cited in the text by giving the last name of the author(s) followed by the year of publication in parentheses e.g. Smith & Jones (1990); (Smith, 1992a, 1992b). For three or more authors, use the first author followed by et al. The full references must be typed, double spaced, on as separate sheet at the end of the manuscript. This should include all authors' names and initials, year of publication, title of article or the book, the full title of the journal, volume and page numbers, and for books and other documents, the publisher's name and place of publication e.g.

Larkham, P. (1997) The continued rise of conservation, Built Environment, 23 (2), pp.89-91.
Sandercock, L. (1997) Towards Cosmopolis: Planning for Multicultural Cities (Chichester, John Wiley and Sons).
Donald, J. (1997) This, here, now. Imagining the modern city, in: S. Westwood & J. Williams (Eds) Imagining Cities (London, Routledge)

6. Electronic proofs in PDF format will be sent to authors via e-mail if time permits. These must be corrected immediately and returned promptly to the publisher. Only printer's errors should be corrected. Major changes or revisions are not acceptable.

7. Libby Porter has chief editorial responsibility for the Interface section. Suggestions and proposals for themes to be explored in the Interface section are welcomed and should be discussed with her in the first instance. E-mail: l.porter@lbss.gla.ac.uk

8. The Book reviews editor is Mark Scott. Email: mark.scott@ucd.ie

9. Early electronic offprints: Corresponding authors can now receive their article by email as a complete PDF. This allows the author to print up to 50 copies, free of charge, and disseminate them to colleagues. In many cases this facility will be available up to two weeks prior to publication. Alternatively, corresponding authors will receive the traditional 50 offprints. A copy of the journal will be sent to all corresponding authors after publication. Additional copies of the journal can be purchased at the author's preferential rate of pound15.00 per copy. This journal does not levy page charges.

10. It is a condition of publication that authors vest copyright in their articles, including abstracts, in Routledge, Taylor & Francis. This enables us to ensure full copyright protection and to disseminate the article and the journal, to the widest possible readership in print and electronic formats as appropriate. Authors may, of course, use the article elsewhere after publication provided that prior permission is obtained from Taylor & Francis. Authors are themselves responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyright material from other sources.
