3. Submission of Manuscripts
All submissions should be made online at Biotechnic and Histochemistry's Manuscript Central site. New users should first create an account. Once a user is logged onto the site submissions should be made via the Author Center.
Please submit the main text, together with the legends to figures and any tables, in a single file in Word 2003 or previous (.doc) format. (Manuscripts that are submitted in PDF format cannot be processed for publication.) Figures for the main text, appropriately numbered but without legends, should be submitted in a PowerPoint, TIFF, or JPG file. (Figures that are submitted in PDF format cannot be processed for publication.) Supplementary text, legends to supplementary figures and supplementary tables, should be submitted in an additional, single file in Word format. Supplementary figures should be submitted in a separate PowerPoint, TIFF, or JPG file. For Supplementary movie files, please see below.
4. Preparation of Manuscripts
Biotechnic & Histochemistry considers all manuscripts on the strict condition that they have been submitted only to Biotechnic & Histochemistry, that they have not been published, and they are not under consideration for publication or in press elsewhere. Authors who fail to adhere to this condition will be charged all costs that Biotechnic & Histochemistry incurs and their papers will not be published.
Research article contributions to Biotechnic & Histochemistry must report original research and all manuscripts will be reviewed by referees. The following guidelines apply:
i. Manuscripts must be typed double spaced, including footnotes, references, legends, etc. Allow top, bottom, and side margins of at least 1 inch. Organize the manuscript as follows:
Page 1 - Give the short title (running head); below this give the name and address of the person to whom proofs and other correspondence are to be sent.
Page 2 - Give the full title of the article and the names and addresses, including institutional affiliations, of the author or authors as they are to appear in the published paper. Institutional affiliations should always be given in English.
Page 3 - Provide an abstract of 100-400 words. The abstract is in lieu of a summary and is required for every paper. It should be written in an informative style permitting its use, without revision, by abstracting services. Give essential details of technics or research findings. Avoid generalizations and nonessential information. Below the abstract, list one to fifteen key words, arranged alphabetically, to assist in indexing. The abstract must be included on page 3 in addition to the abstract text box on Manuscript Central.
Page 4 - Use this and succeeding pages for the text of the article. Papers should be divided into sections: Introduction (untitled), Materials and methods, Results, Discussion, References, Figure Legends and Tables. Each section should begin on a new page.
ii. See Notes on Style for complete information about abbreviations, nomenclature, references and figures.
iii. Nondiscriminatory language is mandatory for all manuscripts. Sexist or racist terms are not tolerated.
iv. Papers are accepted only in English.
v. For information on submitting animations, movie files and sound files or any additional information including indices and calendars please click here.
vi. When using a word which is or is asserted to be a proprietary term or trade mark, authors must use the symbol ® or TM.
5. Figures
We welcome figures sent electronically, but care and attention to these guidelines are essential as importing graphics packages can often be problematic.
- Figures must be saved individually and separate from the text. Please do not embed figures in the manscript file.
- Avoid the use of colour and tints for purely aesthetic reasons.
- Figures should be produced as closely as possible to the finished size.
- All figures must be numbered in the order in which they are cited in the paper. In multi-part figures, each part should be labelled (e.g. A, B, etc.).
- Figure legends must be saved separately, as part of the file containing the complete text of the paper, and numbered in the order in which they are cited.
- The file name for the graphic should be descriptive of the graphic, e.g. Figure1, Figure2, etc.
- Files should be saved as one of the following formats: TIFF (tagged image file format), PostScript or EPS (encapsulated PostScript), and should contain all the necessary font information and the source file of the application (e.g. CorelDraw/Mac, CorelDraw/PC).
Please note that it is in the author's interest to provide the highest quality figure format possible. Whilst color figures will appear in the electronic publication free of charge, paper copy color reproduction will only be considered on condition that authors contribute to the associated costs. Therefore, authors are encouraged to write color-neutral figure legends unless paying for print copy color. Please see Section 10: 'Color and Page Charges', for more information. Please do not hesitate to contact our Production Department if you have any questions.
6. Ethics and Consent
When reporting experiments on human subjects, authors should indicate whether the procedures followed were in accordance with the ethical standards of the responsible organization governing human experimentation and with the Helsinki Declaration of 1975, as revised in 1983. Do not use patients' names, initials, or hospital numbers, especially in illustrative material. Papers including animal experiments or clinical trials must be conducted with approval by the local animal care or human subject governing organizations, respectively.
Identifying information should not be published in written descriptions, photographs, and pedigrees, unless the information is essential for scientific purposes and the patient (or parent or guardian) gives written informed consent for publication. Informed consent for this purpose requires that the patient be shown the manuscript to be published.
7. Disclosure of Potential Conflicts of Interest
It is the sole responsibility of authors to disclose any affiliation with any organisation with a financial interest, direct or indirect, in the subject matter or materials discussed in the manuscript (such as consultancies, employment, expert testimony, honoraria, speakers' bureaus, retainers, stock options or ownership) that may affect the conduct or reporting of the work submitted. If uncertain as to what might be considered a potential conflict of interest, authors should err on the side of full disclosure. Information about potential conflict of interest should be clearly stated at the point of submission (e.g. in a cover letter, or within the appropriate field on the Journal's Manuscript Central site). This may be made available to reviewers and may be published with the manuscript at the discretion of the Editors.
8. Disclosure of Sources of funding
All sources of funding for research are to be explicitly stated, at the point of submission. This may be published with the manuscript at the discretion of the Editors.
9. Authorship Contributions
Contributions must be substantial to warrant authorship. Each author should have participated sufficiently in the work to take public responsibility for the content. All other contributors should be listed in the acknowledgments section.
10. Color and Page Charges
Any figure submitted as a color original will appear in colour in the Journal's online edition free of charge and can be downloaded. Paper copy color reproduction will only be considered on condition that authors contribute to the associated costs. The charges are
500/US$900 for the first colour page and
250/US$450 for each color page after per article.
There are no charges for non-color pages.
11. Proofs
The Editor reserves the right to proceed to press without submitting page proofs to the author. Usual practice, however, is that corresponding authors receive e-mail notification with a password and Web address to access and correct a PDF. Hard copies of proofs will not be mailed. To avoid delays in publication, corrections to proofs must be returned within 48 hours by electronic transmittal or mail. Authors will be charged for excessive correction at this stage of production.
If authors do not return page proofs promptly, the Editor reserves the right either to delay publication to a subsequent issue or to proceed to press without author corrections.
12. Early Electronic Offprints
Corresponding authors can now receive their article by e-mail as a complete PDF. This allows the author to print up to 50 copies free of charge and to disseminate them to colleagues. In many cases this option will be available from up to two weeks prior to publication. Offprints can be purchased by the author(s) at a reduced rate, with an option to pay extra for color figures. A copy of the journal will be sent by post to all corresponding authors after publication. Additional copies of the journal can be purchased at the author' preferential rate of
15.00/$25.00 per copy.
13. Copyright
It is a condition of publication that authors assign copyright or license the publication rights in their articles, including abstracts, to the Biological Stain Commission. This enables us to ensure full copyright protection and to disseminate the article, and the Journal, to the widest possible readership in print and electronic formats as appropriate. Authors may, of course, use the article elsewhere after publication without prior permission from the Biological Stain Commission, provided that acknowledgement is given to the Journal as the original source of publication, and that Informa Healthcare is notified so that our records show that its use is properly authorised. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyrighted material from other sources. See Copyright Permission for full details.
A copyright agreement form can be downloaded by corresponding authors of accepted manuscripts at the proof stage. This should be signed and returned to Informa Healthcare.
14. NIH Public Access Policy
In consideration of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Public Access Policy, Informa Healthcare acknowledges that the broad and open dissemination of NIH-funded research results may benefit future scientific and medical research. Because we value the current and future contributions our journals make to the scientific body of knowledge, we have made certain that our policies accommodate those authors who wish to submit to PubMed Central.
Informa Healthcare's position with respect to public access to NIH-funded work published in Informa Healthcare journals is as follows:
- Informa Healthcare authors may voluntarily submit their funded work to PubMed Central after a 12 month embargo period.
- “Funded work” shall be defined as the final, peer-reviewed manuscript that is accepted by the Editor in Chief of the journal. This manuscript must not be altered by Publisher's copyediting and typesetting services.
- This embargo period begins the day the work is published online at www.informaworld.com.
15. Editorial Charge
A charge of $75.00 per hour may be assessed for extensive editorial revision of accepted manuscripts that occasionally may be required to ensure the quality of presentation expected for Biotechnic & Histochemistry. These services will be supplied to authors as the Editor considers necessary. Editorial charges may be refused without prejudice to present or future publications, and under no circumstances should they be paid from authors' incomes.
