Aims and Scope

Ocular Immunology and Inflammation is a peer-reviewed, scientific publication that welcomes the submission of original, previously unpublished manuscripts directed to ophthalmologists and vision scientists. Published every other month, Ocular Immunology and Inflammation provides an international forum for the publication of basic and clinical research reports on both ocular and intraocular inflammation, as well as the ocular inflammatory response and its control by the immune system.

Ocular Immunology and Inflammation publishes full-length original articles, brief case reports, editorials and Journal Watch. Manuscripts are accepted with the understanding that they have not been and will not be published elsewhere substantially in any format, and that there are no ethical concerns with the content or data collection. Authors may be requested to produce the data upon which the manuscript is based and to answer expeditiously any questions about the manuscript or its authors.

Manuscript Submission

Ocular Immunology and Inflammation receives all manuscript submissions electronically via our Manuscript Central website located at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/noii. Manuscript Central allows for rapid and easy submission of original and revised manuscripts, as well as reviewing and internal communication between authors, editors and reviewers via a web-based platform.

Ocular Immunology and Inflammation uses an online peer view system. Only original papers will be considered. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyrighted material from other sources and are required to sign an agreement for the transfer of copyright to the publisher. All accepted manuscripts, artwork, and photographs become property of the publisher.

Cover Letter

Manuscripts must be accompanied by a cover letter that should include information on prior or duplicate publication or submission, as well as the originality of the manuscript and other information that the authors want to convey to the Editor-in-Chief. If the manuscript has been previously rejected or evaluated in any form by another journal, the authors should note that in the cover letter and indicate how they have improved the manuscript.

The principal investigator or the Corresponding Author of a manuscript containing original data must confirm in the cover letter that he or she had full access to all the data in the study and takes responsibility for the integrity of the data and the accuracy of the data analysis as well as the decision to submit for publication. Cover letters for revised manuscripts must answer, point by point, any concerns noted by reviewers.

Preparation of Manuscripts: Original Articles

Manuscripts should be prepared using MS Word and should be clearly labeled with the authors' name. All parts of the manuscript should be double-spaced, with margins of at least one inch on all sides. Note that Scholar One Manuscript Central will automatically assign each page a running head and footer, as well as page numbers and line numbers to your manuscript. Best online viewing results for authors and reviewers will be obtained with original files that DO NOT contain page numbers, line numbers, or any information in the manuscript header or footer.

Authors should supply a shortened version of the title suitable for the running head, not exceeding 50 character spaces. Each article should be summarized in a structured abstract of not more than 150 words. Avoid abbreviations, diagrams, and reference to the text in the abstract. To expedite the review process, authors may recommend up to 4 reviewers. Please provide the complete name, university affiliation and email address for each reviewer. Note that recommended reviewers will be used at the discretion of the editor.

Structure of Original Articles

Structured Abstracts
Ocular Immunology and Inflammation publishes abstracts using the structured format. The abstract therefore must be divided into sections with the following headings:
PURPOSE
METHODS
RESULTS
CONCLUSIONS

Keywords
Up to five key words, which may or may not appear in the title, should be given in alphabetical order, on the title page, each separated by a semicolon (;). In addition to being printed in the article, these key words form the sole basis of the annual Subject Index.

Text
The text should be divided into the following sections:
INTRODUCTION
MATERIALS AND METHODS
RESULTS
DISCUSSION
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
REFERENCES

Acknowledgements

These should appear on a separate sheet at the end of the written section, before the references.
Declaration of interest

It is the policy of all Informa Healthcare, to adhere in principle to the Conflict of Interest policy recommended by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE). (http://www.icmje.org/index.html#conflict)

All authors must disclose any financial and personal relationships with other people or organizations that could inappropriately influence (bias) their work. It is the sole responsibility of authors to disclose any affiliation with any organization with a financial interest, direct or indirect, in the subject matter or materials discussed in the manuscript (such as consultancies, employment, paid expert testimony, honoraria, speakers bureaus, retainers, stock options or ownership, patents or patent applications or travel grants) that may affect the conduct or reporting of the work submitted. All sources of funding for research are to be explicitly stated. If uncertain as to what might be considered a potential conflict of interest, authors should err on the side of full disclosure.

All submissions to the journal must include full disclosure of all relationships that could be viewed as presenting a potential conflict of interest. If there are no conflicts of interest, authors should state that there are none. This must be stated at the point of submission (within the manuscript after the main text under a subheading "Declaration of interest" and where available within the appropriate field on the journal's Manuscript Central site). This may be made available to reviewers and will appear in the published article at the discretion of the Editors or Publisher.

If no conflict is declared, the following statement will be attached to all articles:

Declaration of interest: The authors report no conflicts of interest. The authors alone are responsible for the content and writing of the paper.

The intent of this policy is not to prevent authors with these relationships from publishing work, but rather to adopt transparency such that readers can make objective judgments on conclusions drawn.

References

References should be numbered consecutively in the text and in the reference list. In the text, reference numbers are entered as superscripts. The references must be verified by the author(s) against the original documents. PubMed offers a useful reference checker at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query/static/citmatch.html

References to journal articles should follow the AMA format and include:
1) the author or authors (list 3; for more than three authors, list the first three followed by "et al.")

4) year
5) volume number

The charge for the first page with color is $1000.00. The next three pages with color are $500.00 each. A custom quote will be provided for color art totaling more than 4 journal pages. The publisher has the right to refuse publication of color prints deemed unacceptable.

Tables and Figures

Tables and figures should not be embedded in the text but instead included as separate files. A short descriptive title should appear above each table with a clear legend, and any footnotes suitably identified below. All units must be included.

Figures should be completely labeled, taking into account necessary size reduction. Each caption should be numbered consecutively in the text, have a brief title, and contain a complete description of each figure. The title and caption should contain enough information so that the figure can be understood independent of the manuscript text. Use complete sentences for the captions except in the title.

Offline Manuscript Submission

Since all manuscripts are reviewed and processed online, all authors are requested to submit their manuscripts through the Manuscript Central system. However, if technical restrictions mean a submission cannot be completed online, please e-mail small files to the office at hank.kaplan@louisville.edu or send larger files on a CD-ROM disk containing properly formatted digital files of the manuscript and figures. Other queries may be sent to:

Manfred Zierhut, Editor-in-Chief
Ocular Immunology & Inflammation
Department of Ophthalmology
University of Tuebingen
Schleischstr 12
72076 Tuebingen, Germany

If the Ocular Immunology and Inflammation office uploads a manuscript on behalf of an author, the Corresponding Author will receive an e-mail receipt of the manuscript and related notices regarding the manuscript. Once a manuscript has been uploaded into the system, the Corresponding Author should log in to the system to follow the progress of the manuscript.

Manuscript Review and Selection

Full-Length Articles, Editorials, and Case Reports are peer-reviewed. After an initial review of the manuscript, the Editor-in- Chief selects a Reviewing Editor who is an expert in the field and who will be responsible for guiding the manuscript through the review process. The Reviewing Editor then selects several outside reviewers to ensure that at least two reviews are completed. Ocular Immunology and Inflammation does not reveal the identity of its reviewers.

Once these reviews are completed, the Reviewing Editor critiques and synthesizes the comments of the reviewers, and provides additional comments to the Editor-in-Chief. The Editor-in-Chief reviews the manuscript together with all comments and makes the publication decision, which is then e-mailed to the Corresponding Author, along with consolidated comments of the reviewers of the manuscript.
