Instructions for Authors

International Review of Sport and Exercise Psychology is the first scholarly, peer-reviewed journal which publishes substantial (up to 8,000 words in length) critical reviews of the research literature in sport and exercise psychology. Typically, these reviews will evaluate relevant conceptual and methodological issues in the field and will attempt to provide a critique of the strengths and weaknesses of separate empirical studies that address common themes or hypotheses. Ideally, they should present the authors' summary of, and conclusions about, the current state of knowledge of the topic of interest as well as an assessment of relevant unresolved issues and future trends. Manuscripts containing reviews of research literature on theories, topics and issues that are at the interface with mainstream psychology are especially welcome. Longer reviews may be considered at the Editor's discretion, should they be considered to make a substantial contribution to the field.

Introduction
Submission of a paper to International Review of Sport and Exercise Psychology will be taken to imply that it represents original work not previously published, that it is not being considered elsewhere for publication, and that if accepted for publication it will not be published elsewhere in the same form, in any language, without the consent of the editor and publisher.

It is a condition of publication that authors assign copyright or licence the publication rights in their articles, including abstracts, to Taylor & Francis. For more information on copyright policy, please see the Transfer of Copyright FAQs at ./authors_journals_copyright_transfer~db=all.

Submission process
Manuscripts must be submitted by one of the authors of the manuscript. The submitting author is responsible for the article during the submission and peer review process.

To facilitate the review process International Review of Sport and Exercise Psychology accepts only online submissions.

All submissions should be made online at International Review of Sport and Exercise Psychology's ScholarOne Manuscripts site. New users should first create an account. Once a user is logged onto the site submissions should be made via the Author Centre.

Authors should prepare and upload two versions of their manuscript. One should be a complete text, while in the second all document information identifying the author should be removed from files to allow them to be sent anonymously to referees. When uploading files authors will then be able to define the non-anonymous version as "File not for review".

Preparation of manuscripts
Currently, International Review of Sport and Exercise Psychology (IRSEP) can only accept manuscripts written in English. Spelling should be US English or British English, but not a mixture within one article. Manuscripts should be double-spaced throughout. Manuscripts should be prepared in accordance with the format and style specified in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, fifth edition. Authors must remove all track changes from their documents before submitting or these will be returned to the author. Pages should be numbered consecutively and organized as follows:

The Title Page (p. 1) should contain the article title, authors' names and complete affiliations, footnotes to the title, and the address for manuscript correspondence (including e-mail, address and telephone and fax numbers).
The Abstract (p. 2) must be a single paragraph that summarizes the main findings of the paper in fewer than 200 words. After the abstract a list of between 3 and 5 keywords that will be useful for indexing or searching should be included.

Competing interests
A competing interest exists when your interpretation or presentation of information may be influenced by your personal or financial relationship with other people or organizations. Authors should disclose all financial and non-financial competing interests.

Authors are required to complete a declaration of competing interests and submit it together with the manuscript. All competing interests that are declared will be listed at the end of published articles. Where an author gives no competing interests, the listing will read 'The author(s) declare that they have no competing interests'. Please consider the following questions:

Financial competing interests

  1. In the past five years have you received reimbursements, fees, funding, or salary from an organization that may in any way gain or lose financially from the publication of this manuscript, either now or in the future? Is such an organization financing this manuscript? If so, please specify.
  2. Do you hold any stocks or shares in an organization that may in any way gain or lose financially from the publication of this manuscript, either now or in the future? If so, please specify.
  3. Do you hold or are you currently applying for any patents relating to the content of the manuscript? Have you received reimbursements, fees, funding, or salary from an organization that holds or has applied for patents relating to the content of the manuscript? If so, please specify.
  4. Do you have any other financial competing interests? If so, please specify.

If you are unsure as to whether you, or one of your co-authors, has a competing interest please discuss it with the editorial office.

Authors' contributions
All authors are expected to have made substantive intellectual contributions to, and to have been involved in drafting or revising the manuscript. Each author should have participated sufficiently in the work to take public responsibility for appropriate portions of the content. Acquisition of funding, collection of data, or general supervision of the research group, alone, does not justify authorship. With the submission of a manuscript, it is assumed that all authors have read and approved the final manuscript.

Acknowledgements
All contributors who do not meet the above criteria for authorship, should be listed in an acknowledgements section. Examples of those who might be acknowledged include those who provided general, technical, or writing assistance Acknowledgement of funding/grants are also included in this section.

Electronic transmission of accepted manuscripts
Authors are requested to transmit the text and artwork of the accepted manuscript to the Editor through International Review of Sport and Exercise Psychology's Manuscript Central site once all revisions have been incorporated and the manuscript has been accepted for publication.

The manuscript will be edited according to the style of the journal, and page proofs will be e-mailed to the author for final review.

Proofs
Proofs will be e-mailed to the corresponding author. To avoid delay in publication, only necessary changes should be made, and corrections should be returned promptly.

Publication
It is a condition of publication that authors assign copyright or license the publication rights in their articles, including abstracts, to Taylor & Francis. This enables us to ensure full copyright protection and to disseminate the article, and of course the Journal, to the widest possible readership in print and electronic formats as appropriate. Authors retain many rights under the Taylor & Francis rights policies, which can be found at ./authors_journals_copyright_position~db=all. Authors are themselves responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyright material from other sources.

Once an article has been accepted for publication, it is published in International Review of Sport and Exercise Psychology immediately as an "in press" article. The paper will subsequently be published in both fully browseable web form, and as a formatted PDF.
