Food Additives & Contaminants considers all manuscripts on the strict condition that they have been submitted only to Food Additives & Contaminants, that they have not been published already, nor are they under consideration for publication or in press elsewhere. Authors who fail to adhere to this condition will be charged with all costs which Food Additives and Contaminants incurs and their papers will not be published.

Contributions to Food Additives & Contaminants must be original research and will be subjected to peer-review by referees.

Manuscript Preparation

The intention is that FAC Part B papers should not be over-long and should closely follow a prescribed style so that readers can quickly locate relevant information.

1. General guidelines

• Papers are accepted only in English.
• Manuscripts should be compiled in the following order: title page; abstract; keywords; main text; acknowledgments; appendices (as appropriate); references; table(s) with caption(s) (on individual pages); figure caption(s) (as a list). A word count should be included and authors should indicate if the paper is for a special issue.
• Each paper should have two to twelve keywords taken only from designated listing available on Manuscript Central.
• Section headings should be concise.
• Abstracts are required for all papers submitted. They should be limited to a maximum of 150 words. The abstract only needs to state what samples were analysed, what method was used, and to summarise the findings. There is no need to provide a lengthy justification or other background.
• Introduction - There is no need for the introduction to provide a long critical review of the background to the subject area so as to provide a justification for e.g. describing the toxicological effects, as it is a given that the reported surveillance is justified and worthwhile. The key points in the Introduction should be:
  - How does the methodology compare with that used by others;
  - What have previous surveillance papers found - give a summary of general trends;
  - Any unique aspects of the study being reported.
• Materials and Methods - Please give full details of the sample types which were analysed, where samples were obtained and the sample sizes taken to indicate whether representative. Concerning the methods there is no need for excessive experimental detail. The key point is the reference to the published method and an indication of any changes/deviations from the published method to be indicated.
• Results and Discussion - The first sub-section in all papers will cover 'Method Quality Assurance' and provide method performance data in a standardised table. 
• Papers submitted to FAC Part B MUST be supported by evidence that minimum analytical quality assurance measures have been taken. Papers will be expected to show evidence of use of a validated method and method performance characteristics such as LODs, LOQ, recovery and precision MUST be provided for relevant matrices. Accreditation to ISO 17025, participation in proficiency testing and analysis of certified reference materials will provide additional evidence of the reliability of data being provided.
• All papers should provide the following information in standard format for reporting of method performance:-

  Please note that manuscripts where ELISA or bioassays have been used for screening will only be accepted if all positive results have been subsequently confirmed by a validated instrumental method.The results for the samples analysed by ELISA will appear as 'numbers of samples' below the LOD in the table of results, and EXCEL spreadsheet.
• Please provide any additional information, which might inform readers about the quality of your data and the quality assurance in your laboratory. The discussion of the 'Surveillance' results should be brief and should indicate for example whether the findings are consistent with other reported data, whether any samples have levels exceeding regulatory limits or any actions being taken as a result of the surveillance.
• Tables of results please provide all data in tables indicating 'Incidence of occurrence' in the format of the following example:-

• Authors are requested to additionally upload all numerical data in an EXCEL spreadsheet which will be deposited in the FAC surveillance database. This data will contain a unique identifier so it can be tracked back from the database to the hard copy publication.
• For all manuscripts non-discriminatory language is mandatory. Sexist or racist terms should not be used.
• Authors must adhere to SI units. Units are not italicised.
• When using a word which is or is asserted to be a proprietary term or trade mark, authors must use the symbol ® or TM.
• Authors should NOT use ppb or ppm as units of concentration but should use ng g-1 and mg kg-1 respectively

3. Figures

• It is in the author's interest to provide the highest quality figure format possible. Please be sure that all imported scanned material is scanned at the appropriate resolution: 1200 dpi for line art, 600 dpi for grayscale and 300 dpi for colour.
• Figures must be saved separate to text. Please do not embed figures in the paper file.
• Files should be saved as one of the following formats: TIFF (tagged image file format), PostScript or EPS (encapsulated PostScript), and should contain all the necessary font information and the source file of the application (e.g. CorelDraw/Mac, CorelDraw/PC).
• All figures must be numbered in the order in which they appear in the paper (e.g. figure 1, figure 2). In multi-part figures, each part should be labelled (e.g. figure 1(a), figure 1(b)).
• Figure captions must be saved separately, as part of the file containing the complete text of the paper, and numbered correspondingly.
• Figures should be produced as near to the finished size as possible.
• The filename for a graphic should be descriptive of the graphic, e.g. Figure1, Figure2a.

4. Reproduction of copyright material

Contributors are required to secure permission for the reproduction of any figure, table or extensive extract (more than fifty words) from the text of a source that is copyrighted or owned by a party other than Taylor & Francis or the contributor. This applies to direct reproduction as well as 'derivative reproduction', where the contributor has created a new figure or table that derives substantially from a copyrighted source. Authors are themselves responsible for the payment of any permission fees required by the copyright owner. Copies of permission letters should be sent with the manuscript upon submission to the Editor(s).

5. Manuscript submission

Authors are invited to submit their manuscripts online at the Food Additives & Contaminants - Part B ScholarOne Manuscripts site. New users should first create an account. Once logged on to the site, submissions should be made via the Author Centre. Upon submission, manuscripts should be clearly marked as Part B papers. Online user guides and access to a helpdesk are available via the 'Get Help Now' link to the top right of the Manuscript Central site.

Manuscripts may be submitted in any standard format, including Word, PostScript and PDF. These files will be automatically converted into a PDF file for the review process. LaTeX files should be converted to PDF prior to submission because Manuscript Central is not able to convert LaTeX files into PDFs directly. This journal does not accept Microsoft Word 2007 documents. Please use Word's "Save As" option to save your document as an older (.doc) file type.

6. Copyright and authors' rights

It is a condition of publication that authors assign copyright or license the publication rights in their articles, including abstracts, to Taylor & Francis. This enables us to ensure full copyright protection and to disseminate the article, and of course the Journal, to the widest possible readership in print and electronic formats as appropriate. Authors retain many rights under the Taylor & Francis rights policies, which can be found at www.informaworld.com/authors_journals_copyright_position. Authors are themselves responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyright material from other sources.

Exceptions are made for authors of Crown or US Government employees whose policies require that copyright cannot be transferred to other parties. We ask that a signed statement to this effect is submitted when returning proofs for accepted papers.
