The editors of the
Journal of Cultural Geography welcome your submission. Please observe the following specifications. If you have questions about them please consult the editor or a recent issue of the journal. Ideas for special thematic issues are also welcome and should be sent to the editor.
1. Submission of Manuscripts
Manuscripts should be submitted to the editor. Authors are encouraged to submit manuscripts electronically. Electronic submissions should be sent as email attachments using a standard program such as Microsoft Word. If email submission is not possible, please send an electronic version on disc or CD-ROM along with three paper copies to the address below:
Editor: Alyson Greiner, Department of Geography, Oklahoma State University, 225 Scott Hall, Stillwater, Oklahoma 74078-4073, USA. E-mail: jcgpress@okstate.edu
Please make sure that your contact details are clearly visible on the outside of all packages you send to the Editorial Office.
Submitted manuscripts are subject to peer review at the discretion of the Editorial Office. Authors should include a cover letter that states that the manuscript has not already been published and will not be submitted elsewhere while it is under review with the Journal of Cultural Geography.
2. General Guidelines
Manuscripts for inclusion in the main section of the journal should be approximately 7,500 words in length. Shorter manuscripts (field notes, commentaries, etc.) are also acceptable. Authors interested in submitting shorter manuscripts are strongly encouraged to contact the editor prior to doing so. All manuscripts should be written in American or British English in an accessible style for a readership that spans many countries and disciplines. Specialist and technical terms and acronyms should be clearly defined. In order to maintain anonymity during any refereeing process, authors are requested to refrain from, or keep to a minimum, self-referencing.
Manuscripts should be typed in 12-point font and double-spaced throughout (including notes and references) with left and right margins of 1.5 inches (4 cm). All pages should be numbered consecutively. The components of the paper should be arranged in the following order: author information page, title page with abstracts and keywords, main text, acknowledgements, notes, references, tables, figures with captions. The desired location of each table and figure should be indicated in the text.
Other formatting specifications:
· The first page of the submission should include the title of the manuscript, the names, affiliations, and full addresses (with telephone number, fax number, and e-mail) of all authors. The address for correspondence should also be indicated.
· The second page should consist of the title, an abstract of not more than 200 words, and up to six keywords.
· Where multiple authors are cited in the text, put ; in between, e.g. (Smith 1999; Jones 2001)
· Use double quotation marks, single for quotes within quotes. Lengthy quotations (more than 40 words) should be set in block form.
· Initials (e.g. US, NJ, BBC) do not have periods between them.
· Numbers: spell out one to nine, then 10, 1000, 10,000.
· Percentages: 10% (except at the start of a sentence).
· Dates should follow these examples: 4 October 2005; in the twenty-first century; in the 1970s.
· If notes are necessary, use a minimum of concise notes. Do not use automatic footnotes or endnotes. Notes should be numbered sequentially in Arabic numerals shown within the text in superscript.
· References should be indicated in the text by author and date. Give page numbers for quotations.
3. References
For names of article authors and in references, there is no space between initials (J.P. Smith, or Smith, J.P.). Please format references (double-spaced) according to the examples below:

4. Illustrations
Maps, charts, and photographs should be clear presentations which are coordinated with the textual material and which are referenced in the text (Figure 4). Illustrations should be submitted in digital form preferably as TIFF, PDF, JPEG, or EPS files. The minimum acceptable resolution is 300 ppi. If they are legible, lower resolutions are acceptable for use in initial review. Please note the following guidelines as well:
· All graphics must be drafted so as to be reproduced in black and white and should be legible at the size of reproduction. Our page dimensions are 7.5” (19 cm) by 4.5” (11 cm). Font sizes below 7 pt. and “hairline” line weights are not acceptable.
· The title of each map or illustration should appear in the caption rather than within the graphic area. A thin, neat line may be used as a means of separating the graphic area from the text.
· The Cartographic Advisor reviews all maps and illustrations submitted with a manuscript and will recommend changes, if necessary. The final decision concerning the suitability of graphics rests with the Editor. Maps not conforming to Journal of Cultural Geography standards will be returned or will be redrafted at the author's expense. Cartographic questions should be directed to the attention of the Cartographic Advisor at jcgpress@okstate.edu.
In addition to the manuscript and tables or figures, authors need to supply a list of figures with captions and relevant copyright permissions. There are no page charges in Journal of Cultural Geography. Authors will be supplied with final proofs for review prior to publication. Any corrections should be clearly identified and returned within three business days of receipt. Major alterations cannot be accepted.
